The US Olympic team has traveled to Milan for the Winter Olympics. Here’s a look at the major highlights of the past couple of weeks.

In terms of standings, the US finished in second place behind top contender, Norway, with 33 total medals, 12 being gold. American women, not even counting mixed events, are up to six golds and 17 medals overall. The previous US winter women’s-only marks: five golds (achieved in 1992, 2002, and 2018) and 13 medals (achieved in 2014 and 2022).
The Olympic team found success in skiing this Winter Olympics, with Mikaela Shiffrin securing gold in alpine skiing. She became both the youngest (18) and the oldest (30) skier to win alpine gold in her career. Breezy Johnson, an alpine downhill skier, secured the first gold medal awarded to an American at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, also marking her first. In freestyle skiing, Elizabeth Lemley, the mixed aerials team, and Alex Ferreira found success in their respective categories.
Team USA also found massive success in the skating categories. The 20-year-old Alysa Liu made history by bringing home the first gold medal in women’s figure skating in 24 years. Also including Liu, the group took home gold in the team event. Young prodigy Jordan Stolz brought home three medals, securing gold in the men’s 500-meter and 1000-meter speedskating and silver in the 1500 meter.
Women’s hockey had a historic run this Winter Olympics, claiming their third ever gold medal. Megan Keller, Boston Fleet captain, scored the winning goal in overtime to bring the team to a 2-1 win over Team Canada. Caroline (KK) Harvey, a Salem, New Hampshire native, was named Olympic MVP, finishing the tournament as the top scorer with 9 points. Not only did the team make history, but so did individual players. Forward Laila Edwards became the first Black woman to play hockey for Team USA.
The men’s ice hockey team took victory over the Canadian national team with NJ Devils’ Jack Hughes scoring the game winner to bring the US team 2-1 in overtime. The team also payed a tear-jerking tribute to Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who tragically passed away earlier this year in a car accident. This marks the first time in Olympic history that both the men’s and women’s hockey teams have claimed victory in the same Olympic season.
This year’s closing ceremony took place at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 22.
