Olympian Alysa Liu is redefining figure skating, and this time, it’s on her terms.
Liu has taken the internet by storm with her alternative style and achievements in figure skating. Her iconic halo hair and smiley piercing has made her name her own brand. A combination of her unique style and confidence recently led her to securing gold at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics.
Her attention to detail and true enjoyment of skating are what makes her routines so unique. At 16 years old, Liu announced her retirement following the 2022 Olympics. Growing up homeschooled in a family of six, raised solely by her dad since the age of five, all she’s known is figure skating. Her decision to retire stemmed from a desire to live a normal teenage life—go out to eat with her friends, spend time with family, and achieve the typical teenage milestones, such as getting her license.
In early 2025, she made her return to skating, although this time, she was only coming back on a few conditions: full control of her career, costumes, and routines.
Her love for the sport and creative routines to modern music have led her to a rise in social media fame. Her use of the song “Stateside” in her Olympics showcase gained attraction online by fans, and the creator herself PinkPantheress. She sees winning Olympic gold as one winning their local intramural basketball game—she does it because she loves it, not for the appeal of others.
Liu brings a new passion and artistry to the world of figure skating, and she isn’t done yet. With her rise in popularity, new doors have opened, both in skating and in advertisements. With this rise in opportunities, she has withdrawn from the 2026 World Figure Skating Championship occurring at the end of March in Prague.
Alysa Liu is making her mark and inspiring fans to rediscover their passions.
